Lake Beratan

A misty highland lake and its 17th-century temple to the water goddess

Lake Beratan fills part of an ancient volcanic caldera in the Bedugul highlands, surrounded by forested hills that are often wrapped in cloud. It is one of Bali's sacred mountain lakes and a key source of irrigation water for the farms of central Bali. On its western shore stands Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, one of the most recognizable temples on the island.

The temple was founded in 1633 and is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the Balinese goddess of water, lakes and rivers. Its most famous shrine, an eleven-tiered meru dedicated to Shiva and Parvati, stands on a small island close to the shore. When the lake is high, the shrines seem to float on the water. Smaller water temples downstream serve the subak communities that depend on the lake.

Mornings are the best time to visit, when mist lifts off the water and the light is soft on the hills. Gardens line the shore, and traditional boats and canoes are available for short trips onto the lake. The air is cool and damp at this altitude, a welcome change from the coast, and the nearby market sells strawberries, flowers and vegetables from highland farms.

Highlights

  • Pura Ulun Danu Beratan on the shore
  • Eleven-tiered meru on the water
  • Mist rising off the lake at dawn
  • Highland market produce nearby

Good to know

  • Arrive at opening for calm water and reflections.
  • Bring a light jacket; Bedugul is much cooler than the coast.
  • An entrance fee applies to the temple and lakeside gardens.
