The banjar & village life

The neighborhood council at the heart of Balinese community life

The banjar is the neighborhood council and community organization that structures much of Balinese life. Each village is divided into several banjar, and almost every married man is a member, with women also playing important roles. The banjar organizes ceremonies, helps with weddings and cremations, maintains public spaces and makes decisions that affect everyone in the neighborhood.

Each banjar has a meeting hall, the bale banjar, an open-sided pavilion where members meet, rehearse music and dance, prepare offerings and hold events. A kulkul, a slit drum made of wood, hangs in a tower nearby and is beaten to call meetings or warn of danger. The banjar works alongside the desa adat, the customary village, which manages temples and traditional law. This system has helped Balinese communities keep their traditions strong.

Visitors often pass a bale banjar without realizing its role. In the evenings, it may be filled with young people practicing gamelan or children learning to dance, while in the weeks before Nyepi the halls become workshops for building ogoh-ogoh. Some banjar welcome visitors to watch rehearsals. The banjar also plays a part in tourism, with some communities running cultural programs and village tours.
